This is a very special story written by Hal for his daughter Geri. Most of the characters and ideas behind the story are true. Can you tell where the fairy tale begins?
Sir Gaye wasn't an ordinary frog. He was special, and was given magical powers from the king of frogs when he was just a little toad. He had the magic of making people happy.
One summers day long ago, in a far away place called Point Pleasant, Sir Gaye was basking in the sun, when he noticed a beautiful little girl playing and dancing and singing songs. He quietly jumped close the where she was, making sure that the little girl would not notice him. Much to his surprise, she was singing his favorite song. Sir Gaye was so happy that he jumped for joy, not realizeing that the little girl saw him. For the moment she was startled and also jumped. They both looked at each other and started to laugh. My name is Geri said the little girl. My name is Sir Gaye and I'm a magical frog. Sir Gaye looked at Geri and thought, what a pretty girl she is, with her curly hair and beautiful smile.
Will you be my friend said Geri? I would love to be your friend said Sir Gaye. Do you have any other friends said Sir Gaye? Yes I do said Geri. There's Mavis and Monica. These are my girlfriend's back home, but my favorite best friend is Shane. Is she your sister said Sir Gaye? Geri laughed so hard that she fell down on the grass and rolled down the hill. Sir Gaye didn't know what to make of it. Why are you laughing? Is it something I said? Geri told Sir Gaye that the reason she was laughing was because Shane was her dog.
Shane was a pretty white dog with a brown head and tail. Does she bite said Sir Gaye? Certainly not said Geri. Shane is the friendliest dog in the whole world. I'm glad said Sir Gaye. Can Shane come out and play with us? Yes, I would like Shane to meet you said Geri.
Geri thought for a moment. I have a good idea said Geri. Let's have a picnic. Geri told Sir Gaye to meet her down by the pond. I'm going to bring a blanket for us to sit on and a basket full of all kinds of good food. Sir Gaye waited patiently by the pond. When he saw Geri and Shane coming toward the pond, he jumped up and down with joy.
Shane was so happy to meet Sir Gaye that she licked Sir Gaye's face. Geri spread the blanket out on the grass and took the food and drinks out of the picnic basket. They were hungry and finished all their lunch.
Now can we play, said Sir Gaye? Yes said Geri, let's play jump rope. Geri tied one end of the rope around a tree, held the other end of the rope and turned it. Sir Gaye was very good at this game, for he could jump higher than almost anyone. They played running and jumping, and Ring-Around-The-Rosie. Next they threw pebbles in the pond and watched the water ripple.
Then Shane gave Sir Gaye a special treat. She told Sir Gaye to get on her back, and gave Sir Gaye a ride. First Shane went slow, but Sir Gaye was shouting to go faster. Shane ran as fast as she could, and stopped short right in front of the pond. Sir Gaye slid off Shanes back into the water! It was so funny that they all laughed. They played all day long and had lots of fun.
It's getting late, and we should go home now said Geri. See you in the morning. Sir Gaye was very happy that he made such wonderful friends. Being a magical frog, he knew that Geri and Shane would have to go home when their vacation was over. They played together the rest of the week and had a great time.
It was Saturday morning and Geri, Shane and Sir Gaye were sitting near the pond telling wonderful stories. It was a sunny day and the sky was blue with big white puffy clouds. Geri was very sad because she had to go home. Sir Gaye told Geri not to be sad because Geri and Shane were the best friends he ever had. That afternoon, Geri's family got in the car and went back home. Geri and Shane looked out the back window of the car and waved goodbye to Sir Gaye as they drove away. Sir Gaye waived back.
Geri missed Sir Gaye so much that she cried herself to sleep every night. This made her Dad very unhappy. The next day, Geri's dad went out and bought her a specail present. He brought it home that evening and gave it to Geri. Shane looked on as Geri took the wrapping paper off, and opened the box. When Geri saw what was in the box, she shouted for joy. There was a stuffed toy that looked exactly like Sir Gaye. She hugged and kissed the toy frog, and Shane barked with excitement.
Now Geri had a favorite rocking chair, and when she went to sleep that night, she had the toy frog sit in her rocker. Geri got out of bed and kissed the frog goodnight, and through a very special magic, the frog came to life and it was Sir Gaye! How did you become a real live Sir Gaye frog asked Geri? That's easy said Sir Gaye. I did it through a special magic. What kind of magic asked Geri? The magic of the love I have for you, said Sir Gaye. sir Gaye lived in Geri's heart forever more.
